When your air conditioner never stops running, you’ll face higher energy bills and possibly expensive AC repairs. As soon as you notice that it won’t shut off, explore the following reasons and call to make a service appointment:
The Coils Are Dirty
AC systems use both evaporator and condenser coils, which cool the air as it passes over them and becomes exposed to refrigerant. Dirty coils limit airflow and force the air conditioner to keep running to produce cold air. A similar issue is when obstructions, like lawn clippings or tree branches, block the vents on the outdoor unit.
Your AC System Is Too Small
AC systems come in a variety of output capacities, meaning you need the right size based on your home’s square footage and other factors. If the air conditioner is too small, it can run for hours before shutting down or not turn off at all. In that case, the system runs constantly because it needs to overwork to cool your home.
The Thermostat Is Bad
A bad thermostat can also cause your air conditioner to keep running all day and night. Loose parts, faulty wiring and dirt buildup can all keep the thermostat from telling the AC system when to shut off. Any service technician who handles AC repairs can replace it.
Your Evaporator Coils Froze
The evaporator coils can freeze when an obstruction blocks airflow or the refrigerant level is low. They also freeze due to blocked air vents and filters. Since the coils can’t reduce the heat in the air, the air conditioner keeps running until the temperature drops.
To get your AC system cycling normally again and shutting itself down, you may need to clean or thaw the coils and adjust or replace the thermostat. Call North County Cooling Inc. to see what repairs your system needs and when to schedule AC installation services.
